Juneteenth traditions are connected to the colors red and black. Mainly in remembrance of the blood shed by many and the “color” of African Americans. This concoction is made in honor of the newly approved federal holiday, Juneteenth which is the day (June 19, 1865) slaves in Texas were told they would no longer be held captive — THEY. WERE. FINALLY. FREE! The message was delivered by Union Army Major General Gordon Granger in Galveston, a place we in the Hook’s Rub Family hold near and dear with many fond childhood memories. Though this freedom was approved years earlier with the Emancipation Proclamation (and some considered as far back as 1807 when congress passed a Bill to halt the importation of slaves into the US), there was a delay in Texan slaves receiving the news. Some theories suggest the messenger was killed before arriving to Texas, and some say the information was intentionally withheld in hopes to continue the abuse and exploitation of free labor. Either way, the message was delivered and Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day or Juneteenth was the first celebration of newly freed slaves in Texas where they sang Black spirituals and shot fireworks! We’re so happy we grew up in a state that, while it has its flawed history, also holds a major place in and has a historic significance in relation to slaves being set free. We know Texas is famous for beef BBQ, but did you know this history?
